Scott Makela passed away Friday, May 7. He had
been rushed to a hospital early Wednesday morning, May 5, with severe
breathing difficulties. His breathing stopped in the ambulance and,
although he was revived, he remained in a coma until his passing.
Doctors discovered that what had seemed nothing more than a nagging
sinus infection or possible allergy for the past two weeks was actually
a rare infection of the epiglottis. Scott had gone to an emergency
room because of increasing breathing difficulty just the evening
before, but the condition was not diagnosed.
Laurie Haycock-Makela and their two children, six-year
old Carmella and their infant son, remain in residence at Cranbrook,
where they are being warmly supported by the Design students and
Art Academy faculty through these last two weeks of the school year.
No public memorial service has been announced yet.
Because Scott embodied such vigor and commitment,
and shared his enthusiasm for design so generously with us all,
I thought you would want to know about this terrible loss. This
was a certainly tragic week for our design community, as we say
goodbye to both Scott and Tibor Kalman.
